Alex and Paige Drummond, daughters of celebrity cook Ree Drummond, have detailed the easy dinners they regularly make in their own kitchens. Their repertoire includes their mother's classic recipes, family favorites, and several of their own inventions for quick weeknight meals. Thepioneerwoman.com first reported the story.
Family Favorites and Mom's Classics
Paige Drummond turns to her mother's recipes when the weather changes. She made Ree's Perfect Pot Roast during the first cold snap in Dallas, letting it cook all afternoon until the meat was "literally falling apart." Alex Drummond also reaches for childhood staples, like her mother's recipe for oven-baked chicken legs, which she calls the "most underrated meat option."
Alex coats the chicken legs in butter or olive oil, lemon juice, and seasonings before baking. She said, "My mom used to make these all the time growing up."
Inventive Weeknight Dinners
The sisters have also developed their own simple recipes. Alex's "go-to comfort dinner" is a grown-up mac and cheese. She stirs sliced chicken sausage into boxed white cheddar macaroni, calling the result a healthier option, albeit "with a question mark."
Her two-ingredient salsa chicken is another staple. It involves only chicken breasts and a can of salsa cooked in a slow cooker. Alex shreds the meat after a few hours and serves it over rice or in tortillas, calling it one of her favorite "SUPER easy" meals.
Paige found a one-pot sausage and leek pasta on TikTok, tried it, and gave it a "10/10." The dish combines sausage and leeks with cream, Parmesan, peas, and pasta all cooked together.
Adapting to Tastes and Diets
Alex has adapted family meals to suit her husband Mauricio's Alpha-Gal diagnosis, which requires avoiding mammalian meat. For taco night, she swapped ground turkey for beef, cooking it with onions, jalapeƱos, and pinto beans. She noted that their daughter Sofia ate it happily, which made Alex wonder if the internet rumor about jalapeƱos losing their spice might be true.
Mauricio, previously the "resident burger-and-carne-asada guy," still contributes. He makes carne asada while Alex prepares a side of roasted sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, onion, and garlic-a combination they were making "like every week."
Simple Comforts and Shortcuts
On nights with minimal effort required, the Drummond families opt for ultimate simplicity. Alex and Mauricio have been eating pigs in a blanket off paper plates while watching football. Alex confessed, "Mauricio and I have been making pigs in a blanket for dinner lately."
Paige's ideal meal for a snowy Dallas day is a classic grilled cheese on thick sourdough bread served with tomato soup, which she called "My fav meal for this weather!"
Alex also relies on her slow cooker for soups once the temperature drops below 70 degrees. Her tortilla soup includes chicken, beans, corn, Rotel, and enchilada sauce, topped with Fritos. Mauricio gave it his "SO YUMMY" approval.
Her hamburger soup, a recipe from Ree, is flexible. Alex adds potatoes, carrots, peppers, green beans, and tomatoes with green chiles, finishing it with a pile of shredded cheese because she and Mauricio "love spice."
During her second pregnancy, a chilly day inspired Alex to make a tortellini soup with Italian sausage, a little cream, and kale, which she adds because it "makes me feel better seeing some green in there."
